With Sarah Ehlen & David Marx

May 31 - June 4, 2022 / trinidad, california

limited to 6 participants
Tuition: $1,950

Come photograph some of the most magnificent trees on the planet. There is nothing quite like wandering through an old-growth redwood forest as the sun begins to shine through the lifting fog. We will also have time to explore the other scenic gems that this area has to offer including spectacular ocean views for sunset.

This workshop will be based out of the tiny seaside town of Trinidad, California which is near Redwood National Park. Our days will begin with early morning field shoots in the redwood groves and end with sunsets over the ocean. Our lectures and demonstrations throughout this workshop will focus on composition, camera skills, and working with natural light in the forest.

We hope that you will join us for this unique opportunity to improve your photography skills while immersing yourself in California’s most incredible forests!

WORKSHOP DETAILS:

  • Maximum number of participants is 6 with two instructors. By keeping our group size small, we can offer substantially more one-on-one time per student.

A small group size also gives us greater flexibility to adapt our schedule as needed for the weather. And of course, in the era of Covid, traveling with a small group is safer and easier for everyone.

This workshop includes both field and classroom instruction and is open to photographers of all experience levels.

  • The cost of this workshop is $1,950 per person.

Workshop tuition does not include lodging, transportation, or meals.

A deposit is required to reserve your space in the workshop. The remaining balance is due 30 days before the start of this program.

Please click here for our full cancellation and refund policy.

Trip insurance is highly recommended to cover any unexpected circumstances.

  • We will begin with a meet-and-greet at 6:30pm on May 31st at our rented house in Trinidad, California. Our workshop will end with a sunset field shoot on June 4th.

We will be visiting old-growth groves throughout the Redwood National and State Park system including the Del Norte, Prairie Creek, and Jedediah Smith areas. We will bring you to the best parts of these parks based on the the weather, current trail conditions, and the spring wildflower bloom.

We will generally spend early mornings photographing in the redwood groves and sunsets out at the ocean, weather permitting.

In between our field shoots, we will have informative discussions on light, composition, camera settings, and Adobe Lightroom image processing techniques.

Although this is not a strenuous workshop, participants should be in good physical condition and able to negotiate stairs, sandy beaches, and rocky or uneven terrain.

Most of our shooting locations are easily accessible roadside locations or short walks on well maintained forest paths. There will be some stairs, and on the coast, we will encounter rocky, uneven ground.

  • You are responsible for your own transportation to and from Trinidad. During the workshop, we encourage carpooling.

Participants should plan on arriving in Trinidad by May 31st. (The workshop begins at 6:30pm.)

Nearest Airports: Humboldt County Airport (ACV): 12 minute drive from Trinidad. This is the closest airport to our workshop.

Additional airports in this area include Crescent City (1 hour, 20 minute drive from Trinidad), Redding (3 hour drive), Oakland, and Sacramento (5+ hours away).

Trip insurance is highly recommended to cover any unexpected circumstances.

  • Participants are responsible for booking their own lodging.

We recommend booking accommodations in Trinidad for the nights of May 31 - June 4th. (Checking out on June 5th, unless you want to stay longer to enjoy the area.)

There is a wide range of lodging and vacation rental options around Trinidad. Here are some suggestions:

    Downtown Trinidad:
Trinidad Bay Bed & Breakfast Hotel

    A short drive from Trinidad:
    Turtle Rocks Oceanfront Inn
    Viewcrest Lodge
    Holiday Inn Express (McKinleyville)

Private Home Rentals in Trinidad & Surroundings:
    Trinidad Retreats
    Vacasa Trinidad Vacation Rentals
    VRBO Trinidad Vacation Rentals

  • We’ll build in time throughout the day for meal breaks.

Trinidad is a small town with limited stores/restaurants. There is a nice market and deli in town for grocery items. For a wider selection, you may want to stock up on snacks and supplies in Crescent City or McKinleyville depending upon which airport you fly into before the workshop.

Here are our favorite Trinidad restaurants:

    Trinidad Bay Eatery & Gallery
    The Lighthouse Grille
    Headies Pizza & Pour

  • We have rented a house in Trinidad with a large living room which we will use for our group meeting space. We will send the address and directions prior to the start of the workshop.

Phone & Internet: There will be phone & wifi internet available in Trinidad but cell phone reception will be limited at many of our shooting locations. Folks that use Verizon generally tend to have better coverage in this area than those who use AT&T.

  • There is not a lot to do in this area other than hiking and exploring the parks. Coordinating with a non-photographing companion can be difficult throughout this workshop. Your spouse / companion should be prepared to be without you for most of the day during this program.

  • You’ll come away from this workshop with a wide range of landscape photos, from iconic views to subtle details. Here are just a few of the topics that will be covered:

    • Dealing with challenging light and tricky exposure situations in the forest.

    • Getting sharp images with the most detail possible.

    • How to photograph beautiful sunset and ocean photos.

    • How to shoot panoramas & HDR’s.

    • Composing for maximum visual impact.

It is best to avoid cotton in favor of wool or synthetic fabrics that will dry faster and keep you warmer if they get wet. It’s always better to bring too many warm clothes, rather than not enough. May is a month that can bring everything from warm sun to cold rain along the coast.

  • • Camera with extra batteries & memory cards

    • Lenses: We strongly recommend bringing a high-quality wide angle lens in the 16-35mm range and a mid-range telephoto such as a 24-105mm.
